Dr Foster Hospital Guide »
My NHS practice is at Warwick Hospital. Along with my colleagues, we were named as one of the best performing hip units in the country. This is determined by the length of stay post-op, the low readmission rate and the low complication rate of surgery.
Extensive training in hip and knee surgery
I graduated from Bristol Medical School in 1998 having also spent time studying in Strasbourg at the University of Louis Pasteur and at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. I completed my basic surgical training at Bristol Royal Infirmary after six months working at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, Australia. I worked with the Exeter Hip Team as part of my higher surgical training. I was awarded the Cutner Travelling Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2008 to undertake a fellowship in complex hip and knee surgery in Canada before returning to Warwick.
I am currently a faculty member of the Corail Hip training course. I train the future surgeons in this high performance hip replacement. I have a degree in Psychology as well as my surgical qualifications. I use this to give a holistic treatment to my patients and pride myself on excellent communication skills.
Patient testimonials
I have many kind letters from patients thanking me for their surgery and the difference it has made to their lives. Some of the comments include:
“Hip is fantastic, joined up with Leamington Cycle club last Sunday and did 40 miles on a bike with only my lungs aching. Extremely happy with the outcome I can’t thank you enough. Many thanks, BL”
“I first consulted Mr Andrew Shepherd in May 2013 and I was immediately impressed by his personable and informative approach. It was clear from the ‘x’ ray that my left hip was in a very poor condition and Mr Shepherd provided me with detailed information about my condition and the options available to me.
It was clear that a total hip replacement was necessary and I underwent surgery in July 2013. I would like to place on record my grateful thanks for the excellent surgery and care that Mr Shepherd provided throughout. My leg lengths are identical and I am extremely pleased with the outcome. I am now four weeks post operative and I am already feeling the benefit of my new hip. This has been a very positive experience for me and I would certainly have no hesitation in recommending Mr Shepherd to anyone in the position that I found myself. AC”
“Sir, It is with much pleasure that l write you. This is your patient on whom you carried out a left hip replacement in August 2012. I finally left England for Cameroon at the end of December 2012. Since I returned, I have been doing physiotherapy exercises and the pain on the operated hip is gradually going off. l am particularly grateful first to you, and the entire Medical Staff of BMI Meriden Hospital for the successful operation to restore my health. I should be grateful if you would share my heartfelt wishes to all of them. I will gladly appreciate any advice you have for me. May God almighty bless, strengthen and equip you as you continue to render your services to humanity. Yours sincerely, VA”
